Is Exercise Safe in Pregnancy?

Short answer: Yes. And not only is it safe — it's highly recommended.
If you're pregnant and wondering whether you should keep moving or start a new routine, you're not alone. For decades, people were told to "take it easy" during pregnancy, but now we know better — and the science backs it up.
The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP), in partnership with the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC), has issued clear guidelines:
All women without contraindications should be physically active throughout pregnancy.
In other words — yes, Mama. Movement is not just safe, it's beneficial. And the benefits aren’t small.
The CSEP guidelines recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week, spread over 3 or more days. That might look like walking, swimming, prenatal yoga, bodyweight strength training, or a mix of them all (hello, variety!).
Regular movement during pregnancy has been shown to:
Reduce the risk of pregnancy-related complications like gestational diabetes and high blood pressure
Ease constipation, back pain, and swelling
Improve mental health, lowering the risk of prenatal and postpartum anxiety and depression
Support better sleep (hallelujah)
Lead to shorter labours and fewer interventions (including lower risk of Cesarean section).
Let’s be honest, it’s not always easy to feel motivated to move when you're dealing with exhaustion, nausea, or the mental load of prepping for birth. That’s where a supportive system makes all the difference.
You don’t need to be a seasoned yogi or athlete. Movement in pregnancy doesn’t need to be intense to be effective — consistency and intention are key.
That said, there are a few medical reasons someone might need to modify or avoid exercise (placenta previa, uncontrolled hypertension, preterm labour risk, etc.), which is why the CSEP recommends always chatting with your healthcare provider first.
As a doula and childbirth educator, I created the Confident Birth Method because I believe that preparing your body and your mind is what makes the difference between feeling overwhelmed and feeling empowered in birth.
The Confident Birth Method combines:
Prenatal yoga (gentle, adaptive, safe, and rooted in breath, nervous system regulation, and postural alignment)
Birth education woven right into our practice (because understanding what’s happening in your body gives you power)
Doula guidance — so you’re not doing it alone and you're learning from a professional
This is more than just exercise. It’s nervous system prep, pelvic awareness, labour rehearsal, and emotional support all rolled into one.
And when you pair that with walking, swimming, and strength training, you’ve got a truly well-rounded, evidence-based foundation for pregnancy and birth.
I believe that the best kind of movement is the kind you actually enjoy — whether that’s walking your dog, dancing in your kitchen, swimming, strength training, or a mix of it all. Movement should feel good in your body and doable in your life.
But if you’re someone who wants more than just movement —
If you’re craving a space where you can prep your body, shift your mindset, and learn how to work with your body during birth — then you might just fall in love with what we do inside the Confident Birth Method.
We move (gently, intentionally).
We learn (what actually happens during labour and how to work with it).
We prepare (emotionally, mentally, physically).
And you’ll be supported by a doula every step of the way.
So whether you’re brand new to yoga or have been practicing for years, you’re welcome here. This is your space to feel strong, supported, and grounded heading into birth.
Yes — if you’re medically cleared, movement is not just safe, it’s a vital part of pregnancy health.
And when your movement plan includes yoga, birth education, strength, breath, and support, you’re setting yourself up for a more confident pregnancy and birth.
If you're curious about how the Confident Birth Method could support you in movement, mindset, and birth, reach out.
Let’s get you grounded, strong, and ready!
